Pomona College STS Minor


Pomona College offers a flexible minor in STS comprised of six courses focused on one of the three STS tracks. (History of Science and Technology; Philosophy of Science and Technology, and Political, Cultural, and Social Perspectives on Science and Technology). A minor is composed of a set of core STS classes and any one of the three sets of focus courses.

STS Core:

  • STS 1, Introduction to Science, Technology and Society
  • One Upper-Division STS-approved course outside the student's area of focus

  • History of Science and Technology Focus:

  • Any two classes out of: STS 80, 81, or 82. (Ancient, Early Modern, and Modern History of Science and Technology)
  • Two additional STS-approved courses in history

  • Philosophy of Science and Technology Focus:

  • Philosophy 103, Philosophy of Science
  • Three additional STS-approved courses in philosophy

    Political, Cultural, and Social Perspectives on Science and Technology Focus:

  • Politics 136, Environmental Politics; or HMC Soc Sci 124, Twentieth Century U.S. Science Policy; or PI Pol. St. 184, Science, Technology, and Politics; or HMC Anth 111, Introduction to the Anthropology of Science and Technology
  • Three additional STS-approved classes in political, cultural, and social perspectives on science and technology
